eventually worldwide. German science was torn apart. Some collaborated enthusiastically with the Nazis; others resigned their posts in protest. Some emigrated; others stayed in post facing ever-increasing dilemmas of conscience. Hundreds were dismissed. There must be so many stories of dignified integrity in the face of this Hitler-driven disaster, which deserve to be better known.
Lise clung on until 1938. She had been dismissed from her university professorship, but this did not of itself interfere with her research at the Institute, to which she was so attached.

In his lifetime he achieved film-star status, mobbed by photographers and journalists. Today the name of Einstein is known to millions who could name few other scientists, living or dead, and who have no clue about the reasons for his fame. If asked for an image of science, many would certainly plump for the famous halo of wild, white hair familiar from the 1930s onwards. Photos also show, almost always, at least the hint of a mischievous grin, prelude to the uproarious laughter for which he seems to have been well known. Even in 1889, a school photo taken in Munich shows the ten-year-old the only smiler. But he was not happy at school. Laughter can hide pain as well as reveal happiness.
